Whatever your situation, though, moving to the beta 5.2 or the final 5.2 has sensible new features, improvements and workflow smoothing. If you’re happy, then you should be happy. If you’re wary of a software update, then you’ll have the new version to assess yourself.

How can I make the “smart previews” work in Lightroom 5? I use the same test photos in both versions and all I get is the error message “You don’t have ‘Smart Previews’ enabled” – when I just press apply from the panels toolbar in 5.2 rc!
Just to add to the confusion, I also have the “smart previews” enabled in the Develop module. And I also have the message “You don’t have the ‘Smart Preview’ attribute enabled“ in the Layers Panel.
In my experience, the moment a photo is processed the “Smart Preview” does not come into being for some time. One way to work around the problem is to enable “Developer mode” again – but that is time consuming, as I have several panels open and it is easy to run into dialog boxes (you are restricted to panels with “Checkboxes” checked)
I would appreciate it if you could clarify this. If the problem has to do with where the photos are stored, that could also apply to existing photos that are synchronised between a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and Lightroom. The way I have my setup, the photos are on an external hard disk, but for some reason the “Smart Previews” do not work on my desktop. If you are able to make it work, could you please suggest a way so it can be done automatically or with a browser url or something.

You can move around the photo until you’ve found a composition that you like. You can also bring up the menu and select crop, rotate, and perspective transform. Each of these functions include a small tutorial that will walk through the process.
